[The one Arlene was fighting poofs at around the same time as Dante's. The last traces of it fade away into the fog, and within moments it may as well have never existed.
Arlene doesn't have the time or inclination to get existential about it, though; not when another Dusk (yes, that sounds like the thing to call them) leaps upon her from behind, limbs turned to rigid stinging blades. The knives briefly vanish as she ducks and rolls, to reappear as she comes up swinging.]
[she starts out muttering it to herself as the tentacle breaks the surface, rising to a near shriek as it makes off with her oar.]
At least you can swim, asshole, give it back!
[It might be better for everybody if Kiyomitsu "forgets" he heard that part. Not something Arlene likes to spread around, you know. She grips the side of the boat tightly with one hand, the other raised over the water as if about to bring a thunderbolt down on the aquatic thief.
Thankfully, even she realizes that's a bad idea before she actually does it.]
[Sounding less than convinced, she slowly turns around. Expecting to see nothing but fog and an empty sidewalk, she flinches what she actually meets: bladed arms waving at her from within the sidewalk.]
Wh- okay, that's a new one!
[While it's half buried, is it too grounded for thunder spells to make a difference? We're about to find out, as Arlene flings one down on the lurking Assassin.]
[HE DEFINITELY HEARD THAT and that is something he will totally "forget" - after they're no longer on the water in a giant oceanic hellhole. Protecting pride is something he understands, but this is probably about survival now. Maybe. He kind of hopes not, but damn, that was a beefy tentacle.
Either way, he sticks the paddle into the water and starts doing his dang best to steer and push their boat forward with the single-row method. It's hard work, but that's where superhuman stamina comes in handy.]
Okay, okay, well-- At least we know this is probably an ocean now? I mean, there's no fresh-water octopus, right? So... maybe that'll help us figure out how to find a shore.
[How?? He sure doesn't know, but dang if he isn't going to try being vaguely optimistic.]
You're telling me--but now we know we can beat them, at least.
[It's definitely more difficult than fighting the Heartless, but between the two of them they'll be able to destroy all of the monsters, including the supersized one. Yeah teamwork! But it's still a long battle and a tiring one, and by the time the two of them have proven victorious Dante's ready for a rest.
He glances over at Arlene, then tips his head in the direction of one of Tisse's 24/7 cafés.]
C'mon. Let's get out of here before they decide to come back.
[Shiori is ready to bolt, honestly. It sticking around did not seem like a good thing...
And then he jumps when thunder cracks out of nowhere. The Assassin doesn't seem too affected, but a fight seems to be a fight as it moves closer to strike at Arlene. Then it sinks completely into the sidewalk. Oh where oh where could it be...]
[Run where? They don't know which way it's going. Arlene warily circles the spot where it disappeared, her arms tucked in close to herself. A double handful of garish novelty knives flashes into existence in her hands. (unless she summoned them already and I forgot idk)]
You're free to go.
[Hmm, what did Dante do to get that Creeper out of the sidewalk the other day? It was already half out when he hit it, though...]
[The knives go away, flashed back to the box she keeps them in when they're not in use, and Arlene swipes the back of her hand across her forehead with a sigh. Phew. She's going to feel this one in the morning, for sure.]
You don't think we've scared them off for a while?
[Rhetorical question. This isn't the first monster rodeo for either of them; she knows it's not that easy. She follows Dante's lead in worn-out silence, speaking up only once they're settled in their seats and she has a hot drink in her hands.]
[shh, Arlene, let him have his optimism. Somebody has to! She calls up a little ball lightning to act as a light, directing it with a wave of her hand to hover above the front of the boat. It does little to illuminate what's under the water, unfortunately.]
Wait-wait, I think I saw something-- it's gone.
[A fleeting flicker of deeper blackness in the dark water, passing underneath their fragile boat. Arlene tenses, expecting the octopus(?) to be back for round two.]
You can use stars to map your way around the ocean, I'm pretty sure.
[Does he actually know how to do that? No, no he doesn't. But he'll have his optimism and he'll keep it until the bitter dang end.
That said, he's definitely on his guard as soon as Arlene says she spots something. He draws the oar out of the water momentarily, since they'd be in big trouble if that got whisked away too, and holds it more like a baseball bat.]
—I'll keep an eye out on this side, okay? And if nothing shows, we'll keep rowing.
[Of all the questions he was expecting to be brought up tonight, that wasn't one of them. Dante lifts an eyebrow, then glances down at his coat.]
Not me. Retrospec. Only they sent me accessories too.
[He digs into the pocket of his coat and comes up with a blindfold to show her with a shrug.]
I got it in the mail at the start of the month, and it makes it easier to keep to the shadows at night. I'm not planning on going home to change, if that's what you've got in mind.
[does the black trenchcoat I forgot to mention earlier make this any more or less weird?]
I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself!
[sHIT the assassin just popped back out of the sidewalk while she was rolling her eyes at Shiori's misplaced heroism
Arlene swears, hopping back from the bladed tentacles as they lash at her legs. A wave of her hand brings a small lightning bolt down on the creature.]
[she sweeps the lightning globe as close to the water as she dares, revealing nothing but water. As it returns to its original spot, she turns to frown at Kiyomitsu.]
Come on, let's go--
[No sooner do the words leave her mouth than something rams them from underneath, violently rocking the little boat, knocking Arlene out of her seat. The ball lightning winks out, but they don't need it to see the tentacles curling over the side.]
Huh. I didn't get one of those, just the boots. [She sticks her foot out from under the table to show off what she means: a black, almost knee-high boot, simple in design but with some classy silver trim along the top.]
It showed up the other day. I remember a couple other people wearing them, but not you.
[A muffled curse as he loses his grip on their LAST DANG OAR from the sudden jostling. Fortunately, it doesn't pitch overboard - it just clatters to the bottom of the boat, and Kashuu is quick to try scooping it up.]
Are you okay? [And then, spotting one of the tentacles:] Get back from the sides!
[It'd do more good if the creature--is it an octopus? Arlene didn't think they were supposed to be that big--weren't trying to climb the damn boat. As it hauls on the side with more of its weight, the craft starts to tip dangerously.
Arlene calls on her now-familiar magic, summoning her knives to her outstretched hand.]
[Ahem. Summoning her knives to her outstretched hand.]
Seriously?
[SUMMONING HER KNIVES TO HER OUTSTRETCHED HAND.]
[Muttering curses to herself, she scrambles empty-handed for the other side of the boat just as, with one last great heave, the lake monster pulls the entire thing over.]
[Well this sure is a concerning situation. He watches as Arlene holds her hand out and a grand total of Nothing At All happens, brow furrowed.]
What's the--
["Matter" is instead replaced with an inelegant shriek as the creature finally flips their boat, sending them crashing into the... whatever body of water this is.
And moments later, he's sitting bolt upright in his own bed, still yelling loudly and sputtering even though he's completely dry. FUN. Arlene will get a frantic text making sure she's alive and well soon after, at least.]
[Who has two thumbs and swims like a brick? This girl! She grasps for the oar in a flailing panic, splashing water into her own face and mouth--
Arlene wakes up on the floor, gasping for air as though she were still drowning, hopelessly tangled in her sheets. She's just about managed to extricate herself from the mess when her phone chimes.]
[Oh my god what is it with the black coats he is not liking this.
Shiori jumps again and just backs away from Ms. Lightning-Bolt. At least the assassin is not happy at this assault, sinking into the ground and..... not appearing again.]
[im so glad they added that even if this browser hasnt been blessed yet]
my guess? it has something to do with all the other weird garbage going on this month the glitches or whatever idk why or how but this isn't the first time it's happened to me before that dream i had the same one with someone else too not going back to sleep now though tbh ┐(´~`)┌

What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck!
